10 Possible Causes of the Obesity Epidemic

Updated: Aug 16, 2023

Fast eating and less physical activity are known to contribute to obesity. However, there is little concrete proof that they are the fundamental reasons for obesity. The International Journal of Obesity lists 10 more potential causes of obesity as a way to spark discussion.

  1. Lack of sleep. A lack of sleep can make you gain weight. Many people today sleep less than ever before.

  2. The pollution. Body weight is regulated by hormones. And many of the toxins of today have an impact on our hormones.

  3. Climate control. If the temperature outside is uncomfortable, you must burn calories. However, more people than ever before reside in and work from climate-controlled buildings.

  4. A reduction in smoking. Losing weight when smoking. Nowadays, fewer people smoke than ever before.

  5. Medical care. Contraceptives, steroid hormones, diabetes medications, some antidepressants, and blood pressure medications are just a few of the many pharmaceuticals that might result in weight gain. The use of these medications is rising.

  6. Population age and ethnic makeup. Young European Americans tend to be less fat than middle-aged persons and Hispanic Americans. The average American is aging and becoming increasingly Hispanic.

  7. Moms who are older. There is some evidence to suggest that an obese child is more likely to be born to an older mother. Women are becoming pregnant at progressively older ages.

  8. The habitat of ancestors. Some sway may originate two generations ago. The grandkids may become obese as a result of environmental changes that made their grandparents obese "through a fetally driven positive feedback loop".

  9. Fertility and obesity are related. Obese people may be more fruitful than thin ones, according to some data. If there is a genetic component to obesity, then there should be a rise in the proportion of obese persons in the population.

  10. Couples with obese partners. If obesity has a genetic component, obese women are more likely to marry obese men, which will result in an increase in the number of obese people in the next generation.

These other significant elements merit additional consideration and research. Additional theories include a fat-producing virus, a rise in pediatric sadness, a decrease in dairy consumption, and agricultural hormone use. What do you believe is the cause of the epidemic?
